Charity Boxing Night

What a year this is turning out to be for Cumbria YFC! Not only has membership bounced back with 1763 young farmers signed up, a 17% increase on 2019’s figures, but community volunteering and fundraising has also increased.

Following on from 18 months of no dances, socials or fundraising, the young farmers recognised the importance of raising funds for themselves and also for other charities who struggled during the pandemic.

Cumbria YFC County Vice Chairman, William Longmire has taken the lead with fundraising and finally brought to fruition an idea that he originally looked at prior to the pandemic. The Cumbria YFC Charity Boxing Night took place on Saturday 4th June at Hoops Basketball Centre, Barrow in Furness with 10 young farmers pitting their skills against each other in the boxing ring. In preparation for the event, the young farmers’ training took place 2-3 times a week and was provided through the Kendal Lads and Girls Club.

Lowick YFC members Archie Carr and Ben Thompson, Crook YFC’s Tim Horsfall and Tyke Benson and Callum Bruce from Wigton YFC competed alongside Jack Fisher from Furness YFC, Kent Estuary YFC’s Ben Handley and Chris Calder, Sarah Stobart from Greysouthen YFC and Emily Pratt from Drigg YFC. Judges for the evening were Messers John Geldard, Stephen Rowlinson and Michael Wilson.

The event was black tie with a DJ and band, hog roast and raffle to add to the night’s entertainment. In excess of £5,000 was raised in support of Cumbria YFC and a great night was had by all.

Organiser Will commented that “The Boxing fundraiser showed the true spirit of young farmers and was supported by young farmers and advisory members from throughout the whole county. Although we had waited 2 years for the Boxing night to take place, it was a great success, I am very proud of everyone who took part and helped out. I would like to say a special thank you to coach Alan Willoughby who helped make the idea become a reality.”

Special thanks must go to all those who helped with the organising and running of the event; Hannah Hodgson, Tim Horsfall, Charlotte Wilson, Steph Jarman, Emma Blaylock, Abigail Graham, John and Janice Longmire and Alice Longmire.
