Despite a week of torrential rain, the sun shone as the Cumbria YFC County Sports got under way on Sunday 9th October.

The young farmers had a great day of ladies’ rounders, junior basketball and men’s rush hockey at Kirby Stephen Grammar School.

The Drigg YFC mixed junior basketball team showed great skill taking a very well-deserved 1st place. Eden Valley YFC were close on their heels taking 2nd place and Grayrigg YFC were placed third.  4th place went to Kent Estuary YFC.

Those young farmers playing ladies rounders bore the brunt of an exposed and windy sports field, but showed stoical indifference and got on with some very hard fought matches.  Teams showed great skill and determination throughout the day with a triumphant Lowick YFC taking 1st place. Wigton YFC (A team) took a well-deserved 2nd place and Kent Estuary and Eden Valley YFCs were placed respective 3rd and 4th.

The men’s rush hockey teams showed great prowess on the astro turf with Lowick YFC once again showing their sporting dominance by taking 1st place. Eden Valley YFC took a hard-fought 2nd place, with Penrith YFC in 3rd place and Kent Estuary YFC placed 4th.

Chief Steward, Paul Barrow an advisory member for Eden Valley YFC, kept the day on track and was ably assisted by County Vice Chair, William Longmire. Certificates were presented to the winning teams by Cumbria YFC County President, Stephen Procter. Thanks were made to Kirkby Stephen Grammar School for hosting the event and to the following umpires and referees who gave their time so willingly to ensure the day was a great success: Louise Wilson, Matthew Burbury, Evonne Sowerby, Laura Westgarth, Gill Winspear, Ewan Maddrell and Kieran Hall.

Thanks also went to stewards Ted and Lil Barker, Stephen Procter, Judith Emmott, Neil Sowerby, Alison and Brian Wilson, Cath Armstrong and Alex Sibbald who made sure that the teams were in the right place at the right time! Kentdale First Aid kept every one safe and cleaned up some minor injuries and Fell and Dales provided much needed refreshments. Thanks also to Social and Competitions Secretary, Ella Batey who placed all the judges and stewards for one of the biggest young farmer events in the calendar.

The top 3 teams in each sport will now represent Cumbria at the Northern Area Weekend Sports Finals hosted by East Riding YFC in spring 2023.
