County Sports

Oct 6, 2024  •  General

On Sunday 6th October the young farmers gathered at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School for their annual County Sports. On what was an unseasonably warm, autumn day badminton (10-11 years) mixed rounders (12 – 15 years), men’s 5 a side football (16- 28 years) and ladies netball (16 – 28 years) were played by some extremely competitive teams.

Raughton Head YFC played a great game of rounders, taking first place against Kirklinton YFC who took a well-deserved second place. The mixed badminton teams showed great prowess in the sports hall with Raughton Head YFC coming 1st followed by Caldbeck YFC B right behind them in 2nd. Carlisle YFC took a hard-fought 3rd place, with Caldbeck YFC A 4th.

Battling it out on 2 courts, the netball teams showed great skill and determination throughout the day with a triumphant Skelton YFC taking 1st place. Eden Valley YFC took a well-deserved 2nd place and Crook YFC and Kent Estuary A were placed respective 3rd and 4th.

The men’s 5 a side football went off without a hitch with Skelton YFC coming 1st closely followed by Broughton A YFC 2nd Brampton YFC 3rd and Sedbergh YFC 4th.

Chief Steward and County Chair, Charlotte Wilson kept the day on track and certificates were presented to the winning teams by Cumbria YFC County President, John Garnett. Thanks were made to Kirkby Stephen Grammar School for hosting the event and to the following umpires and referees who gave their time so willingly to ensure the day was a great success: Evonne Sowerby, John Garnett, Neil Sowerby, Tracy Hodgson, Amy Emmott, Catherine Armstong, Andrew Swinbank, Lisa Bowe, Connie Hodgson, Harriet Holme,

Thanks also went to stewards Julie Bowker, Stephen Park, Matthew Emmott, Gillian Winspear, Laura Forster, Paul Barrow, Hazel Winter and Ella Batey who made sure that the teams were in the right place at the right time! Kentdale First Aid kept every one safe and Al’s Butty Van provided much needed refreshments. Thanks also to Social and Competitions Secretary, Rosie Pratt who placed the judges and stewards for one of the biggest young farmer events in the calendar.

The top 3 teams in each sport will now represent Cumbria at the Northern Area Weekend Sports Finals hosted by Lancashire YFC in March 2025.
